Trauma Informed Care & Therapy

Therapeutic Preparation for Adoption

Therapeutic Preparation for Adoption is a structured programme designed to support children and young people with a plan for adoption. It helps them begin to make sense of their experiences, develop trust in safe adults, and prepare emotionally for the transition into a permanent family.

The therapy combines approaches from attachment theory, behavioural science, and child psychology. Using play, creative methods, and structured conversations, the programme helps children explore their feelings, understand their story, and build the skills needed to settle into adoptive family life.

What Can Preparation for Adoption Help With?

Who Can It Support?

Therapeutic Preparation for Adoption is suitable for any child with a plan for adoption who has a complex plan or circumstances where traditional preparation methods are not suitable.

What Does It Look Like?

The programme begins with an assessment of the child’s needs and experiences, followed by a tailored therapy plan. Sessions use creative methods such as play, art, and storytelling, alongside structured therapeutic conversations.
Work typically focuses on:

  • Helping the child understand their journey and prepare for adoption.
  • Exploring and managing difficult emotions such as loss, fear, or anger.
  • Building skills in trust, safety, and forming relationships.
  • Supporting the child to develop a sense of identity and belonging.

This support is usually time-sensitive and will be planned around adoption introductions, ensuring the therapeutic process helps prepare the child at the right time and in the right way.
