Trauma Informed Care & Therapy

Integrative Play Therapy

Integrative Play Therapy uses play to help children process emotions, experiences, and trauma. Play is a child’s most natural form of communication, allowing them to express and make sense of their world when words are difficult.

The integrative method means our Play Therapists draw on a range of therapeutic techniques they are trained in, tailoring each session to meet the individual needs of the child. This creates a safe, supportive
space where children can explore feelings, develop understanding, and learn new ways to manage challenges.

Who Integrative Play Therapy Helps

Who Provides It?

Our Play Therapists are qualified professionals registered with Play Therapy United Kingdom (PTUK) or the
British Association of Play Therapists (BAPT). Many also have additional post-qualifying training in specialist
areas
, enabling them to provide a highly skilled and flexible approach to supporting children and families.

What Can Integrative Play Therapy Help With?

Who Can It Support?

Most effective for children aged 3–12 years (developmentally), particularly those who find it difficult to
talk about their feelings. Especially beneficial for children who have experienced trauma, neglect, or other
significant life challenges.

What Does It Look Like?

Sessions may combine directive activities (structured therapeutic tasks with a specific goal) and non-directive play (led by the child’s choices and interests). Goals are identified through assessment sessions, consultation with parents/carers and professionals, and, where appropriate, direct conversations with the child.

All of our play therapy includes a clear plan, defined goals, and regular analysis to assess whether the
therapy is moving towards those goals.

A wide range of resources may be used, including toys, art materials, sand trays, and role-play items.
The therapist observes and engages with the child, modelling coping strategies and helping them
reframe challenges.
This process supports emotional healing, builds resilience, and develops healthier
emotional responses.

Review meetings are held mid-way to discuss progress, and a final report with recommendations is provided at the end of the intervention.
